Twelve apartments were evacuated and four cars at 10 storage units destroyed when fire broke out near the car port at an Orem apartment complex on Monday afternoon.

When Orem City firefighters arrived at the apartments at 1492 S. 175 East just after 4 p.m., they found four cars completely engulfed in flames, Battalion Chief Shaun Hirst said.

The apartments were evacuated while firefighters fought to extinguish the flames, which had also spread to personal storage units located near the car port.

Ten of the storage lockers, which are approximately six feet by ten feet in size, were engulfed and the contents considered a total loss, Hirst said.

Fire exposure damage was also evident on the outside of the building once the fire was out, which Hirst said took 10 to 15 minutes.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
