A man is behind bars in Washington County on Friday night, accused of hitting another man with his car in Hurricane on Sunday and then leaving the scene.

The pedestrian, a 22-year-old male whose identity was not made public in a press release from the Hurricane Police Department, died from his injuries.

Investigators believe William J. Hendrickson was driving the Honda Ridgeline captured on security camera leaving the scene of the crash.

The crash happened at 1:21 a.m. in the area of 500 N. State Street. Three minutes earlier, officers had been dispatched to the intersection on reports of a man in the roadway, acting strangely.

Officers arrived and performed life-saving measures until the man was transported to a local hospital.

Investigators interviewed Hendrickson Friday, with his attorney present, and say he admitted to hitting something in the roadway, but told police he thought it was debris.

He was booked into Purgatory Correctional Facility and held on a third-degree felony count of leaving the scene of an accident involving death or serious bodily injury.

Individuals are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
