A 76-year-old man who hadn't been seen or heard from since Sunday was found dead in Logan Canyon on Wednesday, the Cache County Sheriff's Office confirms.
It appears he may have suffered a medical event, like a heart attack, while hiking, said Lt. Doyle Peck.
(UPDATE: Sept 10, 7:30 a.m.)-- The hiker has been identified by Cache County officials as William Bud Mortensen.
(Original report continues) -- Search efforts began on Tuesday when the sheriff's office was notified by concerned family members.
Peck said family members described the man as an avid hiker who frequented the Right Hand Fork area, and would often embark on 3- to 5-mile hikes by himself.
His vehicle was located near Right Hand Fork on Tuesday evening. Wednesday afternoon, search crews located his body in what Peck described as a heavily-wooded area off trail. The search effort included horses, a helicopter, side-by-sides, motorcycles, and people on foot.
The sheriff's office is awaiting reports from the medical examiner's office to determine what caused his death. He has not been publicly identified.
