A man with a license plate paying homage to Star Trek was forced to remove it from his vehicle because it was considered "offensive."
Nick Troller of Manitoba, Canada had a license plate reading "ASIMIIL8," along with a license plate holder reading "We are the Borg, resistance is futile" for two years and never received a complaint.
The phrases are a reference to Star Trek where the alien race known as the "Borg" encounters the Star Trek Enterprise and tells the crew "you will be assimilated; resistance is futile."
The Borg are cybernetic organisms, linked in a hive mind called "the Collective," according to Wikipedia.
On Facebook in 2017, Troller posted a picture of his license plate, along with a letter from Manitoba Public Insurance telling him to remove his license plate because it was offensive.
Apparently a woman complained, saying the plate was offensive because of "the history of [Canadian] government assimilation policies."
"It has been brought to the attention of this office that the personalized licence plate "ASIMIL8" is considered offensive," the letter read. "The Registrar of Motor Vehicles reserves the right to recall personalized license plates that are deemed inappropriate. You are requested to surrender your personalized licence plates "ASIMIL8" immediately.
The letter goes on to say that license plates are "the property of the Crown."
A friend of Troller's commented on his Facebook post saying: "You could struggle against the government on this one, but I suspect your resistance would be futile."
Irked by the letter, Troller posted a picture of his plate on Facebook, along with the following statement:
"What is this world coming to where our individuality and creativity is being questioned and scrutinized for the littlest things like a personal license plate. Mine makes reference to the iconic TV show Star Trek Voyager. I have a plate bracket that says on the top "We are the Borg" and on the bottom it says "Resistance is Futile" and my plate says ASIMIL8. Many people complimented me on my plate and the reference to the iconic TV show. Now I am being told by Manitoba Public Insurance that apparently two people complained and that I have to take the plate off my car and have to get a new one. I have had this plate for nearly 2 years. What do think?"
Troller complied and surrendered his license plate to "the Crown."
A few months after his received the letter Troller posted a picture of his new license plate, also Star Trek themed.
Using the same plate holder which reads "We are the Borg, resistance is futile" Troller's new plate reads "COLECTV," also a reference to assimilation by the "hive mind' of the alien Borg.
"This is my new plate, keeping with the same theme. We are the Borg, lower your shields and surrender your ship. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to serve us. Resistance is Futile," Troller said on Facebook.
So far, no one has officially complained to Canadian authorities about Troller's current license plate.
