While it may seem like common sense, police are warning folks not to shoot their guns in the air to welcome in the new year.

The warning comes from the Cleveland Police Department, but the advice applies to everyone, especially those in urban areas.

Police in Ohio are issuing the warning on Twitter.

"Seriously, can we stop doing this?" Cleveland Police said in a tweet.

"As New Year’s Eve approaches, the City of Cleveland reminds the public that not only is celebratory gunfire illegal, but also dangerous. The consequences and risks can be significant.," Cleveland Police said on their blog.

Shooting guns in the air can hurt or even kill people.

"The intention may be a celebratory shot toward the sky, but the consequences of that moment can be disastrous for a neighbor or someone blocks away, causing injury or death," police said.
