A Utah couple says seatbelts saved their lives after a head-on crash, and the intense footage of that wreck will be used to try to save the lives of others.

Utah Highway Patrol is sharing the video of the crash as it kicks off its "Click It or Ticket” campaign during a busy travel time.

Troopers say while the majority of Utahns wear seatbelts, data from recent years shows there's around 10% who don't. Those individuals make up almost half of the more than 250 deaths on roads this year alone.

For this campaign, UHP’s added nearly 800 additional law enforcement shifts over the next two weeks. They’re focusing on seatbelt use. Two Utahns in particular know their lifesaving potential firsthand.

In December of 2018, an impaired wrong-way driver hit Jillian White and Ty Bolton. Dashcam footage shows the moments headlights come out of nowhere, giving the two little to no time to react.

Just like many families will do over the holidays, they were on their way to celebrate with friends. With holiday travel picking up, they hope this video and their story of survival will serve as a reminder to Utah drivers.

Jillian White recalled:

You can't control other people's behaviors, you can only control yourself. That night we had no idea there would be a wrong-way driver going NB in the SB lanes on a freeway and I know for sure we would not be alive today if we hadn't put our seatbelts on that night."

The couple walked away with non-life-threatening injuries, but others aren't so lucky.

In the last two years, UHP says there have been over 250 wrong-way drivers on Utah roads, killing at least 20 in those crashes.

The campaign ends on Nov. 29.
