The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a majority of Americans to gain weight, according to the CDC.

A fitness website, TotalShape.com, wants to help folks lose their "lockdown love handles" by offering four people $13,000, and the chance to lose that excess coronavirus weight by trying out popular diets. The program will guarantee $8,000 for each person participating with $5,000 available to each person in milestone bonuses.

Each of the four candidates will be testing out popular weight loss methods with may include calorie counting, the KETO diet, strength training, and increased NEAT (non exercise activity thermogenesis - where basic activity levels are increased outside of exercise).

The four people picked to participate will be required to publicly document their weight loss efforts. That includes a series of video diaries, posts to social media, blogs, and regular photos. This data will then be analyzed by a team of the website's experts.

Candidates must live in the U.S., be over 21 years old, and have a BMI over 30 with no known preexisting health conditions. A doctor will also need to sign-off on the candidates participation.

Tyler Sellers, a fitness coach with TotalShape said:

This pandemic has changed people’s lives in ways we would never have imagined. With gyms closing for months, to not being able to leave you home for weeks on end, it makes sense that even normally fit and healthy people will have struggled with unintentional weight gain since March. We know there’s a lot we can do to support people in their new weight loss journeys safely and effectively and we’re excited to get the first applications in.”
