Search and rescue crews looking for overdue hiker at Zion NP

UPDATE (Oct. 2) — Missing hiker John Fiske Burg was found at Zion National Park and transported to a hospital in St. George, officials stated.

(ORIGINAL STORY) — Search and rescue crews are looking for an overdue hiker at Zion National Park.

The park tweeted Thursday that the Canyon Overlook trail is temporarily closed while they conduct the search.

Crews are searching for 79-year-old John Fiske Burg who was last seen on Sept. 28 around 7 a.m. leaving the La Quinta hotel in Kanab, Utah.

Officials said that Burg is staying at the hotel with a group of 50 hikers and told others that he may hike the Canyon Overlook Trail. Burg's vehicle was found at the trailhead of the Canyon Overlook Trail, but it's unknown at this time when Burg arrived at the trailhead.

Described as 5'9" and 220 lbs., Burg has brown hair, brown eyes, and no facial hair.

Burg may be wearing the following items:

  • little yellow jacket
  • blue Osprey backpack
  • shorts
  • ankle high hiking boots
  • white visor hat with neck guard

Zion National Park Rangers along with Washington County Sheriff’s Office are continuing to investigate this missing person case and are requesting assistance from visitors who may have seen Burg.
